. . .
Is your desktop teeming with icon clutter gone wild? Okay, maybe the files, folders and shortcuts to your apps are placed strategically to blend in with the aesthetic of your wallpaper but maybe not. I bet there’s a bunch of files you parked on your desktop all the way back from who knows when and for who knows what.

On top of the population explosion overflow on your desktop, maybe your download folder is bulging at the seams with hundreds if not thousands of files that you knew you needed at some point in time but how far back in time are we talking about?

Downloading things may be a hobby (like collecting fusion hip hop/fusion hip hop[1] from wherever you can find it) or it’s stuff that you need to get a job[2] or paper[3] done but whoa Nellie(!)–before you can shake a stick at it, it’s become a habit and you’re just downloading anything left and right and that’s probably not a good thing.

Why? Because that blackhole now known as your downloads folder has no rhyme nor reason; there may be doubles, heck, files-in-triplicate (or more) lurking around in your downloads folder of that one download that you wanted a bunch of times only you didn’t remember you’d already downloaded it way back when. And then again. And yet again.

If consistency has any meaning here, then your amount of email–or emailssssss, for the many who amass multiple emails for their multiple online personalities–is equally over the top.

You may see this at work when you repeatedly get messages from the IT department that your emails are near maxing (or have already maxed) the limit of allowable storage space. Personal email services are more generous enabling Inbox emails to grow exponentially. Hey, anytime you wanna trip down memory lane all you gotta do is just go back to your first emails–sometimes you’ll find gems from old picture attachments or set your mind to thinking about so-and-so you haven’t heard from in a million years.

Speaking of pictures, now that digital cameras and cell phones have unleashed the inner photographer in us all, how great is it to know you can take pictures until the cows come home[4] and not have to worry about running out of film since memory cards are a dime a dozen (sorta) or you can upload your shots on the multitude of photo storage sites and start over again with a blank slate.

Maybe you can live with mountains of data but perhaps your CPU prefers otherwise regardless of how many external hard drives or cloud storage you connect to.

Whatever.

If you decide enough is enough, you can find all sorts of tips or apps online on how to cut the clutter. Then again, one man’s clutter is another man’s treasure. That thing from way back when that you obviously didn’t need all these years, well, might be okay to have now…

Or not.

. . .
Jeez, how the heck did people survive way back when, in the dark ages, when there was no web, no smart phones, no iPods or iPads…

True confessions: I do know some folks who can only access the web at the public library. Yeah, the library. When’s the last time you’ve been? The library with all the print-on-paper books, DVDs, music tapes and CDs you can check out–same kinda stuff you can probably read, watch and listen to right on the web.

These days, most libraries have an ebooks collection although last time I checked it wasn’t a heck of a lot.

Lots of homeless go to the library–most of them are the ones using the library computers to get online an hour at a time.

Dunno why it seems funny to see the homeless connected with cell phones. Sometimes you just don’t feel it for some folks when stuff happens but other times you can’t help but see how thin a line it is for the folks who can’t help that they got on that track and it sure helps that family, friends, docs, social workers, prospective employers, who-the-heck-ever, can get in touch with the housing-challenged and vice versa…

More E.M. Sanchez photos can be found on the 2nd floor of Caffe Bianco, 39 Sutter St, San Francisco, CA, off of Market; the pieces have been hanging there a little over a year so the yelper’s review of the art from 2007 doesn’t apply…

What you do on the web is nobody’s business but your own.

Not.

Unless you purposely go into hiding, everything you do on the web is up for grabs. Ad blocking, cache clearing, private/anonymous browsing and other under-the-radar methods can only cover so much. But let’s save all that for another chapter.

For now, let’s just say your web comings and goings aren’t being used by shameless data gatherers testing the limits of the law while trying to make a buck, and cops won’t be coming anytime soon knocking on your door for some nefarious online activity that would put your mother to shame.

For now, let’s slip on rose colored glasses and just see what’s out there without a shadow of the dark side.

Like…
– Researching that obscure but eye opening factoid that may put your paper over the top for the class that could be just the thing to get a leg up on your future prospects

– Looking for a job out of the millions of job search sites listing billions of jobs that don’t seem to make a dent on unemployment

– Finding a diagnosis your doctor missed since you weren’t able to go into all the details of the symptoms during the visit that went by in a blink of an eye (even though waiting in the waiting room was way long)

– Catching the latest next-best-thing/drama on TV (programs from all over the world and you get to do subtitling on the fly in any language, even Esperanto) that can now be viewed on the web from sites that increasingly show ads though still not as many as on TV

– Listening to music you otherwise would never in a pre-www world listen to

Hanging out with folks to chat, get tips, or play voyeur to the stupidest (self proclaimed) and coolest things people do all over the world who want the whole world to see them do it whether it be on YouTube, Facebook or other social nooks and crannies of the web

– Gawking at all kinds of paintings, sculptures, photography, whatever the heck they call art without all the pretense

– So many other things: news, answers to all your questions, reviews on anything under the sun, you name it…
